Myanmar authorities say contending ethnic groups suffered similarly in recent violence

Authorities in Myanmar say 29 people died in the communal violence that swept through a western state over the past week. The breakdown showed for the first time that both the Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya communities suffered equally.

Local authorities in the Rakhine state capital Sittwe said Thursday that 13 ethnic Rakhines and 16 Rohingya Muslims were killed in clashes across the state from last Friday through Wednesday.

Both communities also suffered property destruction, and their houses of worship were torched, with nine Buddhist monasteries and seven mosques burned down. The tensions are based on ethnic rivalries but also split along religious lines.

The number of displaced people soared from previous figures to 31,884 being sheltered at monasteries and schools.
