Explosions at Chinese fireworks factories kill 14, injure 13

Explosions at two fireworks factories in China left 14  people dead and 13 injured, AFP reports.

A blast at a factory in Dongtun, central Henan Province, that was operating illegally, left seven dead and 12 injured Monday morning, the Xinhua news agency said.

The owner was detained by police and local authorities ordered the closure of all fireworks factories in the district, AFP reports.

The cause of a separate explosion on Sunday at a licensed factory in Yichun, eastern Jianqxi Province, where seven people were killed and one other injured, is still being investigated.

China's vast fireworks industry is notorious for lax safety standards. Exported Chinese fireworks often do not meet safety standards at their destination countries, AFP reports.
